Week 1: STEAM Smorgasbord
June 17 - June 21 (no camp June 19)

This week will provide a different theme and instructor each day to introduce campers to a variety styles and projects. 

Note that there will be NO camp for the Juneteenth Holiday (June 19). ​

Monday (June 17th): Costume Creation
Instructor: Dennis Chan  

9:00 am            Housekeeping and intros

9:10 am            Activity: Helmet Origami
                          Description: Fold a helmet out of paper together.
                          Materials: Origami paper

9:30 am            Activity/Lesson: Gauntlet Project
                          Description: Build a gauntlet from a provided kit out of cardboard, brads, and rubber bands.

10:15 am                                     BREAK

10:30 am          Activity/Lesson: Helmet project
                          Description: Build a helmet from cardboard, glue, and decorations.

11:45 am                                     LUNCH

12:30 pm          Continue morning activity

Tuesday (June 18st): Arts & Culture
Instructor: Elizabeth Jiménez Montelongo

9:00 am            Introductions

9:30 am            Activity: Alebrijes
                          Description: Campers will learn to make a professional sculpture of an alebrije, a fantastical creature, using
                          "papier-mâché" techniques. They will design & sculpt their own alebrije, add two layers of paper with paste, and sand
                          and paint their finished sculptures (which will be done during Tinker Time after their sculpture has had time to dry.
                          Materials: paper for drawing designs, newspaper, masking tape, brown paper rolls, paste, paint
                          Supplies: Pencils, scissors, sandpaper, paint brushes

10:15 am                                     BREAK

10:30 am          Activity: Step By Step Painting
                          Description: Campers will paint a Hummingbird on a Cactus, which the artist designed because both are images that
                          appear in Indigenous Mesoamerican art and modern Mexican art, which is part of her heritage.
                          Materials: Paint canvas and paints
                          Supplies: Paint brushes, paint palettes, sponges, cups for water, aprons

11:45 am                                     LUNCH

12:30 pm          Transition into Tinker Time: Brief reflection in Maker Journal
                          Campers will share what their favorite morning activity was, including why
                          Campers will write what they plan to do during Tinker Time in their journals
 
12:45 pm          TINKER TIME
                          
Alternative Tinker Time Activity: Modeling Clay
                          Campers will use clay to create bowls with heads, feet, and tails! Alternatively they can create an animal of their choice,
                          such as a snake, jaguar, elephant, or cat. The instructor will offer demonstrations on how to shape various animals and
​                          how to use clay modeling tools to enhance their creations.

Thursday (June 20th)

9:15 am            Warm up: Exploring tones and shades through color play
                          Description: Students are invited to explore different interactions of colors with paint and colored pencils
                          Materials: Paint, paintbrushes, paper, colored pencils, graphite pencils

9:30 am            Activity/Lesson: Mixing and matching
                          Description: Students have the opportunity to engage in creating colors for a more realistic color match and exploration
                          of real-life shapes
                          Materials: Paint, paintbrushes, paper, colored pencils, graphite pencils

10:15 am                                     BREAK

10:30 am          Activity/Lesson: Pushing the lesson by using abstract colors and color palettes
                          Description: Let’s get loose! Exploration into using warm/cool colors to make a themed work
                          Materials: Paint, paintbrushes, canvas paper/canvas?, colored pencils, graphite pencils

                          Description: How to prep a sketch. Then, exploring techniques of shading, weight, dynamism
                          Materials: Paper, pencils, ink pens

9:30 am            Activity/Lesson: Drawing what you know
                          Description: Pattern recognition and how to use it
                          Materials List: Paper, pencils, ink pens

10:30 am          Activity/Lesson: Drawing what you see
                          Description: Pattern recognition and how to forget it in order to create dynamic lines
                          Materials: Paper, pencils, ink pens

11:45 am                                     LUNCH
