Session 2 - Art and the Environment
June 28 to July 9 (No camp on July 5th)
Instructor: Michele Guieu
Discover the importance of Climate Change and the consequences of human activity on the environment. If you are interested in Climate Change, want to understand it better, and learn what you can do about it, then this camp is for you! Nature is the most precious thing on this planet and we are going to create art using different techniques and various natural elements, starting with a mini succulent garden! We will then use what we have learned to create a collaborative mural online as part of The Climate Collage.

Prepare glass jars to learn and see how a greenhouse gases work and how it is trapped in the atmosphere
Materials: 2 Mason jars, one with a lid, 2 cups of water

1:35pm Activity 2: Succulent garden
Make a mini succulent garden that is adapted to the drought-conditions California is going through.
Material: Cuttings of Succulents, succulent soils, small rocks, rocks for decoration, newspaper for protection, cup for watering, plate for dripping water.
Activity 3: Green beans planting
Plant Green Bean seeds, and monitor their growth.
Material: Green beans seeds, potting soil, pot, cup for watering, plate for dripping water.

What do we know about “human activities” - what are they?

Make one (or two or more!) mini mobiles with plastic trash Michele collected on the beach. A good reminder to participate in beach cleanups when we can, and to try not to use too much plastic.
Material: plastic trash, lasered wooden tags, glass beads, thread, a piece of driftwood.

Create one (or two or more!) fun small automata about plastic pollution. Make it a scary monster of sorts!
Material: a small block of wood, pierced, one long piece of metal, 2 short pieces of metal, one piece of popsicle stick, pierced, plastic trash, decoration like googly eyes, a piece of cardboard for base.

The warming of the atmosphere has many consequences on the ocean, land, animals and plants. Insects populations are declining in many places around the world. Insects are essential in each eco-systems they live in, and they also pollinate many of the crops we consume.

Create one (or two or more!) small automata with a simple mechanism about pollination, and learn about one or more critical insects.

Evaluating emotions (use the emotions tree) - Now that you understand better how climate change works, how do you feel about it? There are many things we can do, let’s start thinking about SOLUTIONS!

We need to care about nature because nature is us. If we ignore and destroy nature, we are destroying ourselves. Let’s observe nature, look at all the beauty it has to offer! Cyanotypes are a fantastic way to make art with natural elements.
Material: cyanotype kit, a piece of cardboard, a container for water (larger than the cyanotype paper), elements from nature: leaves, seeds, weeds, twigs, etc.

Exploring more about nature with natural elements you found in your neighborhood. We can make beautiful art with nature!
Material: natural elements ( leaves, seeds, weeds, twigs, etc.), thread, glass beads, a small branch

Create symbols for the different sections of your mural by making stamps you print with colorful inks.
