Week 4: Art & Nature
July 8 - July 12
Instructor: Amy Hibbs
This week campers will get messy and creative with many different natural materials. We'll begin by making cyanotypes with plants and other objects. We'll use those cyanotypes in intricate dioramas that will allow each camper to express something about themselves through the animal of their choice and its habitat. We'll also explore the ancient story of the World Turtle who carries the earth on its back. Hands-on projects will include using paint and collage to create a pattern or mandala on the back of a wooden tortoise as a reflection of the World Turtle Story. If time allows, we will experiment with plants to extract pigment and make natural paint.

Tuesday (July 9th): The Symmetry of Nature
9:00 am Housekeeping (if needed)
9:15 am Warm up: Quick review of yesterday’s activity- what worked, what do you like?
Description: Look at yesterday’s creations. Practice “critique”--saying something thoughtful (and kind) about others’
creations.
9:30 am Activity/Lesson/Description: Talk about symmetry- what is it? What are the different kinds? Talk about the symmetry of
basic shapes, and shapes in nature especially. Go outside and collect objects that demonstrate symmetry and that we can
use for a type of collage.
Return and prepare for next activity by arranging the objects on precut paper shapes- large circles, squares, pentagons,
hexagons.
Materials: Bags or baskets for collecting stuff, garden clippers, an assortment of starter objects to
demonstrate symmetry of different kinds, precut shapes with sturdy white paper, 6 or so small spray bottles for
ink, a few pipettes
10:15 am BREAK
10:30 am Activity/Lesson: making shadow prints with shaped paper and found objects
Description: Using the object we found and discovered in the first activity, students will lay object out on their paper
shapes on newspaper, and using the ink in spray bottles, they will spray onto the paper. The objects laid on top will
prevent the ink from marking the paper, making shadow shapes. Students can use pens or other tools to embellish if time
allows.
Materials: precut shapes, objects, small spray bottles with diluted ink, pipettes, newspaper, black felt tip pens. Small spray
booth made of cardboard
11:45 am LUNCH
12:30 am Continue morning activity
12:45 pm Transition into Tinker Time: brief reflection in Maker Journal
1:00 pm TINKER TIME
Optional Activity: Continuing the morning’s activity
Description: students can continue to embellish their shadow prints or make one with each available shape.
2:15 pm Snack
2:30 pm Review of day and Camper assessment of activities
2:45 pm Clean Up
3:00 pm Camper Pick Up
