Week 4: Art & Nature
July 8 - July 12
Instructor: Amy Hibbs

This week campers will get messy and creative with many different natural materials. We'll begin by making cyanotypes with plants and other objects. We'll use those cyanotypes in intricate dioramas that will allow each camper to express something about themselves through the animal of their choice and its habitat. We'll also explore the ancient story of the World Turtle who carries the earth on its back. Hands-on projects will include using paint and collage to create a pattern or mandala on the back of a wooden tortoise as a reflection of the World Turtle Story. If time allows, we will experiment with plants to extract pigment and make natural paint.

Monday (July 8th): Cyanotypes with Natural Materials

9:00 am            Housekeeping and intros

9:15 am            Ice Breaker activity: Ice Breaker Activity: “My Favorite” using large die
Description: Students take turns rolling a large die with a noun printed on each side (“color,” “animal,” season,” etc...) and
they tell the group their favorite ___ (and why?) before passing the die.
                          Materials: large die

9:30 am            Activity/Lesson: Making Cyanotypes Part 1
Description: Using prepared paper and Amy’s UV suitcase, we will make a series of cyanotypes. Beginning with natural
objects we will make 2-3 prints each– more if there’s time!
Materials: a selection of natural objects, prepared cyanotype papers, cyanotype kit (suitcase, three tubs for rinsing, citric
                          acid, buckets if necessary)

10:15 am                                     BREAK

10:30 am          Activity/Lesson: Making Cyanotypes Part 2
Description: We’ll make more prints after a quick hunt for objects outside. This time we’ll add a layer of drawing with
Posca pens on acetate. Coated fabric will also be available.
Materials: stuff from outside, prepared paper, acetate sheets, a few black posca pens

10:15 am          What is Design Thinking?/Maker Journals
                          Description: Campers answer

11:45 am                                     LUNCH

12:30 am          Continue morning activity– check on prints, think about what worked, what didn’t work

12:45 pm          Transition into Tinker Time: brief reflection in Maker Journal

1:00 pm            TINKER TIME
Optional Activity: use the cyanotypes we made in the morning for collage, or to draw on using colored pencils and/or
watercolors. If students want, we can use a large prepared piece of fabric to make a banner for our week! This will be
made outside in the sun, not with the suitcase.
Materials: colored pencils, watercolors (pans are fine), brushes, water containers, white paper for base of collage,
scissors, glue stick, colored paper (origami paper, construction paper, odd recycling paper) for more collage.
Try to save a few of the cyanotypes from each camper for use on Day 4-5

2:15 pm            Snack
2:30 pm            Review of day and Daily Camper Assessment
2:45 pm            Clean Up
3:00 pm            Camper Pick Up

Tuesday (July 9th): The Symmetry of Nature

9:00 am            Housekeeping (if needed)

9:15 am            Warm up: Quick review of yesterday’s activity- what worked, what do you like?
Description: Look at yesterday’s creations. Practice “critique”--saying something thoughtful (and kind) about others’
                          creations.

9:30 am            Activity/Lesson/Description: Talk about symmetry- what is it? What are the different kinds? Talk about the symmetry of
basic shapes, and shapes in nature especially. Go outside and collect objects that demonstrate symmetry and that we can
use for a type of collage.
Return and prepare for next activity by arranging the objects on precut paper shapes- large circles, squares, pentagons,
                          hexagons.
Materials: Bags or baskets for collecting stuff, garden clippers, an assortment of starter objects to
demonstrate symmetry of different kinds, precut shapes with sturdy white paper, 6 or so small spray bottles for
                          ink, a few pipettes

10:15 am                                     BREAK

10:30 am          Activity/Lesson: making shadow prints with shaped paper and found objects
Description: Using the object we found and discovered in the first activity, students will lay object out on their paper
shapes on newspaper, and using the ink in spray bottles, they will spray onto the paper. The objects laid on top will
prevent the ink from marking the paper, making shadow shapes. Students can use pens or other tools to embellish if time
                          allows.
Materials: precut shapes, objects, small spray bottles with diluted ink, pipettes, newspaper, black felt tip pens. Small spray
                          booth made of cardboard

11:45 am                                     LUNCH

12:30 am          Continue morning activity

12:45 pm          Transition into Tinker Time: brief reflection in Maker Journal

1:00 pm            TINKER TIME
Optional Activity: Continuing the morning’s activity
Description: students can continue to embellish their shadow prints or make one with each available shape.

2:15 pm            Snack
2:30 pm            Review of day and Camper assessment of activities
2:45 pm            Clean Up
3:00 pm            Camper Pick Up

9:30 am            Activity/Lesson: Making a color wheel together from scratch
Description: we’ll use watercolor paints to make a color wheel. Amy will guide students in this step-by-step process,
aiming for clear colors and good mixing skills.
Materials: Watercolor paper with pre-drawn circles and wedges for colors, watercolors, mixing pans, brushes, small rags

10:15 am                                     BREAK

Thursday (July 11th): Animal Dioramas

9:00 am            Housekeeping (if needed)

9:15 am            Warm up: What’s your favorite animal? Why? How do you pick your favorite animal?
                          Description: conversation together

9:30 am            Activity/Lesson: Drawing exercise with animal parts.
Description: Each person receives a piece of paper folded specifically (we fold together). We draw one part of an animal,
real or imaginary), on the exposed part of the paper, folding after we finish and passing it on. The result is a patchwork
                          animal made by different people.
We do this 2 times quickly, one time taking our time. Talk about line, texture, color.
Materials: white drawing paper, fairly large. Can use white construction paper, pencils, erasers, drawing pens, markers,
paint, paper clips or small binder clips (about a dozen)

10:15 am                                     BREAK

10:30 am          Activity/Lesson: Intro to animal dioramas
Description: Students choose a small wooden animal and a box to make a habitat for the animal. They are encouraged to
think of the animal’s qualities and what it might like in its habitat.
Materials: small wooden animals, variety of boxes, a big variety of materials for making dioramas. Recyclables, tape, wire,
cardboard, paint, etc.. All are great.
