Week 3: Up-cycled Art
July 3 - July 7
Instructor: Various
In this session campers will learn how everyday items and packaging materials can be used to create art, toys, and other fun projects. Each instructor will take you on a different journey using materials that you may already have around your home, transforming them into something new.
Note that there will be NO camp for the 4th of July Holiday.

Monday (July 3rd):
Instructor: Eliane Bauer
9:00 am Housekeeping and intros
9:15 am Ice Breaker Activity: Paper flowers
Description: Students each get two sheets of paper (from a magazine, scrap paper, or otherwise destined for the waste
basket) – how can you turn this into a flower?
Materials: magazine pages (preferably ones with less interesting pictures), newspaper (can also be scrap paper or other
paper that would be tossed otherwise), scissors, tape, glue sticks
9:30 am Activity/Lesson: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, Repurpose, Upcycle – Discussion on Waste
Description: We will have a brief discussion on waste and what the terms (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, Repurpose,
Upcycle) mean. What are limitations of each? What waste have you been producing during camp so far? What kind of
waste do you think you typically produce a lot of? Are any of the items recyclable? Can you reuse anything? Can we apply
the Design Thinking Process?
Materials: Journals, pens/pencils
10:00 am Activity/Lesson: From 2D to 3D
Description: Students will fold, roll, wrap, and coil paper and other flat materials to change the texture and build
dimension. What can you make?
Materials: magazines, snack wrappers (e.g. chip bags, candy wrappers, caprisun), scissors, glue sticks, tape
10:15 am BREAK
10:30 am Activity/Lesson: Self-portrait Collage
Description: Students will create a self-portrait in the form of a collage. Feel free to experiment and build layers and
dimension with the techniques learned earlier.

caprisun), scissors, glue sticks, tape, pencils, pens
11:30 am LUNCH

Wednesday (July 5th): Fun With Toilet Paper Tubes
Instructor: Kim Mesa
9:00 am Warm-up Activity: Pinwheels
Description: We will make pinwheels using paper, straws, straight pins, and beads.
Materials: Scissors, pliers, clear tape, and markers/colored pencils
9:30 am Activity: Toilet Paper Tube Characters
Description: Toys, like action figures, can be expensive and kids often get bored with them pretty quickly. So why buy
them when you can make your own? Using a little imagination and materials you have around the house you can have
fun making your own action figures! Create pollinators for your garden, animals for a zoo or farm, or pets to add to your
family. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination! This fun activity guides you through the process of making a
butterfly using a toilet paper tube and colored paper. You will then learn how to modify your designs to make other
critters/Characters.
Materials List: Toilet paper tubes, colored paper, pipe cleaners or twist ties, scissors, glue sticks, clear tape, and markers
10:15 am BREAK
10:30 am Activity: Marble Runs
Description: Campers will design, prototype, and create marble runs. A marble run is very much like a slide – only
instead of sliding down a structure, a marble rolls down it. Building a marble run is an effective way to explore the
concepts of relative position and motion, slopes, turns, gravity, heights, and more. Building a Marble Run from scratch is
challenging and teaches the fundamental concepts of engineering in a practical way.
Some of the educational benefits of making Marble Runs include:
Building Spatial Awareness
Raising Creativity
Developing Engineering Skills
Enhancing Problem-Solving
Improving Hand-Eye Coordination.
Materials: Design Thinking worksheet, blank paper, toilet paper tubes, cardboard (various thicknesses), paint,
colored paper, clear tape for prototyping, and glue guns
11:30 am LUNCH
12:45 pm Continue morning activity: Finish and share Marble Runs
1:00 pm TINKER TIME
2:15 pm Snack

Thursday (July 6th): Paper Construction
Instructor: Kim Mesa
9:00am Warm Up Activity: Paper Construction Garland
Description: Campers will create garland using strips of paper to create various shapes.
Materials: Scissors, hole punch, clear tape, colored paper, and yarn or string,
9:30am Activity: Paper Lanterns
Description: Campers will make paper lanterns, which can be used as decorations for parties and holidays like
Lunar New celebrations. This activity includes instruction for a long lantern and a round lantern.
Reference: Lanterns can be traced back thousands of years to the Eastern Han
Dynasty in China (25–220 C.E.), when the bright, floating objects were used not
only as light sources but also to relay important military signals across long
distances. Today, however, the traditional lanterns hold a slightly lighter
significance, as they’re commonly used to commemorate cultural and spiritual
celebrations across Asia and in various destinations around the world with large
populations of Asian descent.
10:15 am BREAK
10:30 am Activity: Fire Breathing Dragon
Description: Campers will make Fire Breathing Dragons, which are used to celebrate the Lunar New Year
(the beginning of the year based on the Lunar Calendar). Campers will make their dragons out of toilet paper
tubes/cardboard, colored paper/ and tissue paper.
Materials: Scissors, clear tape, liquid glue or glue gun, craft sticks, pompoms, googly eyes, and self-stick gems
Reference: The Lunar New Year is celebrated across Asia and in many other
parts of the world. Dragons are usually a part of the Lunar New Year
celebrations, with red dragons dancing to create excitement and usher in good
fortune. The Dragon is also part of the Lunar Calendar, with the next Year of the
Dragon in 2024.

Alternative: If no one wants to share an activity: What items did you bring with you? (Discussion)
9:15 am Activity: Upcycled Jewelry and Ornaments (Bottle Cap Jewelry or Stain Glass Ornaments)
Description: Students will create jewelry or ornaments from repurposed materials.
Materials: Bottle caps (from non-alcoholic beverages) both plastic and metal, thicker clear plastic sheets (often used as
“windows” in packaging to display product), hammer, nails, wire, wire cutters, small pliers, chains to attach jewelry to as a
necklace, other jewelry holders (such as rings or earrings intended to attach your own items to), repurposed yarn,
sharpies, magazines, clear nail polish, white glue, items from the tinker jars
9:45 am Activity: Egg Carton and plastic bottle projects
Description: Student will create flowers, animals, or costume noses out of egg cartons. They also have the option to make
flowers out of plastic bottles.
Materials: Egg Cartons, plastic bottles, repurposed yarn, paint, pens, wire, wire cutters, small pliers, pipe cleaners, tape,
white glue, stapler, hole punchers
10:15am BREAK
10:30 am Activity: 3D Self-portrait Collage
Description: Students will create a 3-dimensional self-portrait using different repurposed materials. They can choose to
do something other than a self-portrait but should work in 3 dimensions.
If students brought in anything from home, this would be a good project to incorporate it.
Materials: Various repurposed materials, wire, hot glue, hot glue guns, magazines, snack wrappers (e.g. chip bags, candy
wrappers, caprisun), scissors, small pliers, wire cutters, chicken wire, cardboard (both as possible base for collage and to
use in collage)
