Elisabeth Sylvan, Krause Center for Innovation
Presenting in Week 1/ Art and the Environment Elisabeth, KCI’s Maker in Residence, runs the KCI Underground Makerspace. Previously Elisabeth was the VP of Education at The Tech Museum, where she launched a new Education Department. Before that, she was a Research Scientist at TERC where she worked on game-based STEM learning environment and was the Project Director of TERC’s Kids’ Survey Network, a web-based community of practice focused on data literacy. Her M.S. and Ph.D. are from the MIT Media Lab where her work addressed how socio-technical systems support shared knowledge and group action. There she worked on projects such as the Scratch programming environment and online community, The Computer Clubhouse. Eunice Almira, AYA Youth Leader
Presenting in Week 2/ Peer Projects and Tinkering Eunice was a camper in eighth grade and enjoyed it so much that she came back during ninth grade as a student volunteer and Youth Leader. While everyone else was busy during tinker time I was messing around with the fabric left over from the day's project. She made her first flower that lit up and the rest is history. |
Leonard Morales, AYA Youth Leader
Presenting in Week 2/ Peer Projects and Tinkering Leonard Morales is a former camper in the Art and Design Thinking Camp program. During his five years of experience in the camp he had a interest during his first year with pipe cleaners and building/ creating creatures and such ( check out his Wire Dinosaur on the Week 4 page and Pirate Ship on the week 5 page). Leonard also has experience with all types of circuits, including sewing circuitry. |
Emily Takara, Youth Leader
Presenting in week 2/ Peer Projects and Tinkering Emily Takara is a rising freshman at Pinewood School in Los Altos Hills, California. She likes to draw, run, and create 3D print designs. Emily has volunteered at Makerfaire, Mini Makerfaire booths, and at community pop-up maker events for the past four years. She has been a finalist and two time national winner of the NASA sponsored Future Engineer Design Challenge in the Junior strand. This year she was a national finalist in the teen category of the Future Engineers Design Challenge. She has attended the AREF Art & Design Camp since it started in 2013 and is excited to have the opportunity to lead workshops as an older teen. Joon Luther, AYA Youth Leader
Presenting in Week 2/ Peer Projects and Tinkering Joon Luther is a high school student passionate about art, coding, and robotics. She herself attended Art & Design Thinking Camp in past years where she was free to play and explore. She is proud to come back as a guest artist teaching what she loves! In her free time, she likes to play the piano, work on her games, and practice the guitar. |
Leah Jay, Artist
Presenting in Week 3/ Visual Storytelling Leah Jay has been an artist and illustrator in San Jose for 25 years. An artistic polymath and avid experimenter, she creates using a variety of media including watercolor, acrylic, pastel, ink, fiber, and mixed media collage. Her work has been featured in various publications, and highlights from her career include directing 2001’s WTC Memorial Art Project to facilitate artist’s responses to 9/11, sharing her piece “Yesterday’s California” as the cover of the Silicon Valley Metro, and successfully crowdfunding her artbook “Amphibian Love” to benefit Save the Frogs. In August 2016 she joined My Art Resources as a staff blogger. She loves teaching, inspiring others and being a catalyst for unlikely connections between both people and materials. |
Robinson Wood, Illustrator, Concept Artist
Presenting in Week 4/ Fantasy Character Design Robinson Wood is a concept artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. He loves painting and drawing, especially environments, props, and characters for movies and games. Serving a narrative is his north star. And using light and color to convey an emotion or communicate an idea is a lifelong passion. |
Jason Su, Urban Designer and City Planner
Presenting in week 6/ Design Your World Jason Su is an urban designer and city planner passionate about creating vibrant cities and equitable public spaces. He is the street life manager for the San Jose Downtown Association, where he implements art, construction, and activation projects. In his time, downtown San Jose has seen more art crosswalks, murals, a pedestrian count program, pop-up dog park, and the 2015 Knight Cities Challenge project - San Pedro Squared. He is a fellow with K880 Emerging City Champions and New Leaders Council and has guest lectured at San Jose State University and UC Berkeley. Previously, he worked in the streetscapes division with SF Public Works on the Castro Streetscape Project and in strategic planning and research with the City of Oakland and SPUR. He earned his Master of Urban Planning from SJSU and Bachelors in Economics and Sociology from the UC Irvine. |
