Week 6: Sustainability Design
July 29 - August 2
 Instructor: Corinne Takara

How might we imagine a future without plastic? How might we creatively design in collaboration with nature? In this camp week campers will expand on ideas of what materials can be used to make products. Campers will grow structures with mycelium (the root like structure of fungus), grow bacterial cellulose leather sheets, make bio plastic from algae and chitin (the exoskeletons of insects and crustaceans), grow meal worms on coffee cups, and design future products using a Circular Design process. Campers will also learn to vacuum form their own mold forms and explore simple circuitry along the way.

Discussion of sustainability design and circular design. Campers will sketch and write descriptive words
of what comes to mind when you think of: Fungi, Bacteria, Mealworms, Algae, Chitin
Activity: Mealworms - Campers will start a mealworm study with polystyrene
~ Experiment by feeding polystyrene coffee cups to one, and bran meal to a control group of mealworms.
