Week 3: Up-cycled Art
July 1 - July 3 (no camp July 4 & 5)
Instructor: Various
In this session campers will learn how everyday items and packaging materials can be used to create art, toys, and other fun projects. Each instructor will take you on a different journey using materials that you may already have around your home, transforming them into something new.
Note that there will be NO camp for the 4th of July Holiday (July 4 & 5).

Monday (July 1st)
Instructor: Eliane Bauer
9:00 am Housekeeping and intros
9:15 am Ice Breaker Activity: Paper flowers
Description: Students each get two sheets of paper (from a magazine, scrap paper, or otherwise destined for the waste
basket) – how can you turn this into a flower?
Materials: magazine pages (preferably ones with less interesting pictures), newspaper (can also be scrap paper or other
paper that would be tossed otherwise), scissors, tape, glue sticks
9:30 am Activity/Lesson: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, Repurpose, Upcycle – Discussion on Waste
Description: We will have a brief discussion on waste and what the terms (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, Repurpose,
Upcycle) mean. What are limitations of each? What waste have you been producing during camp so far? What kind of
waste do you think you typically produce a lot of? Are any of the items recyclable? Can you reuse anything? Can we apply
the Design Thinking Process?
Materials: Journals, pens/pencils
10:00 am Activity/Lesson: Woodburning on Cardboard
Description: We will look at how we can use a woodburning tool to decorate plain
cardboard. Learning how to woodburn is also a great stepping stone to learning how
to solder, if that is something campers are interested in later.
Materials: Woodburning station, cardboard, wood scrap pieces (if available), pencils, sketch paper
10:15 am BREAK
10:30 am Activity/Lesson: From 2D to 3D
Description: Students will fold, roll, wrap, and coil paper and other flat materials to change the texture and build
dimension. What can you make?
Materials: magazines, snack wrappers (e.g. chip bags, candy wrappers, caprisun), scissors, glue sticks, tape
10:45 am Activity/Lesson: Collage
Description: Campers will create a collage that represents themselves or things that are important to them in some way.
Feel free to experiment and build layers and dimension with the techniques learned earlier.
Materials: Cardstock (as the base to create the collage on), magazines, snack wrappers (e.g. chip bags, candy wrappers,
caprisun), cardboard, scissors, glue sticks, tape, pencils, pens, woodburning station
11:45 am LUNCH
12:30 pm Continue morning activity
12:45 pm Transition into Tinker Time
Share back your work from the morning.
Brief reflection in Maker Journal and plan what you want to do during Tinker Time
1:00 pm TINKER TIME Intro to Tinker Journal
Optional Activity 1: Taking a project further: Adding a circuit
Description: We will look at how to create a basic circuit. Campers will then add a light to something they already made
or create a light up wristband from repurposed materials. In this project we combine reused materials with new
materials (the circuit).
Materials: Copper tape, cell batteries, LEDs, conductive thread, needles, other conductive materials, tape, scissors,
various repurposed materials, hot glue station, other circuitry supplies like the pager motors to experiment with,
circuitry salad bar pages
Optional Activity 2: Upcycled pencil case or wallet
Description: Students will create a pencil case or wallet out of materials that would otherwise be tossed.
Materials: repurposed thin cardboard (toilet paper roles or paper towel roles work well, back of a used writing pad),
magazines, snack wrappers (e.g. chip bags, candy wrappers, caprisun), tetra pak (typically drink cartons), duck tape,
clear thick tape, repurposed yarn
2:05 pm Share back what we made during Tinker Time.
Tasks for Friday: Think of a 5 minute activity you could teach your peers. Bring in some materials to work with!
2:15 pm Snack
2:30 pm Clean Up
2:45 pm Review of day and Camper assessment of activities
3:00 pm Camper Pick Up

Tuesday (July 2nd)
Instructor: Kim Mesa
9:00 am Introductions
9:05 am Warm-up Activity: Tootsie Pop Flowers
Description: In this fun activity campers will make flowers with Tootsie Pop centers. Who doesn’t love flowers, especially
when there is a treat included? Using easy to access materials around your house you can design and construct flowers to
share or keep for yourself.
Materials: Tootsie Pop, cupcake liners (plain and patterns), wire
Supplies: Scissors, hole puncher, wire cutters, green masking tape
9:30 am Activity: Toilet Paper Tube Critters
Description: Using a little imagination and materials you have around the house you can have fun making your own
action figures! Create pollinators for your garden, animals for a zoo or farm, or pets to add to your family. The
possibilities are only limited by your imagination!
Materials List: Toilet paper tubes, colored paper, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, pompoms, beads, and other decorations
Supplies: Scissors, markers or colored pencils, tape, glue
10:15 am BREAK
10:30 am Activity: Marble Runs
Description: In this activity campers will design and make their own Marble Run. A marble run is very much like a slide –
only instead of sliding down a structure, a marble rolls down it. Marble Runs are dynamic and offer endless hours of
entertainment. The fun doesn't stop after a marble run is built because you can continually make tweaks to change up
the action.
Materials: Cardboard, toilet paper tubes, colored paper
Supplies: Scissors, markers or colored pencils, tape, glue
11:45 am LUNCH
12:30 pm Continue morning activity: Finish and share Marble Runs
12:45 pm Transition into Tinker Time: brief reflection in Maker Journal
Campers will share what their favorite morning activity was, including why Campers will write reflections in their
Maker Journal and plan what they plan to do during Tinker Time
1:00 pm TINKER TIME

Wednesday (July 3rd)
Instructor: Eliane Bauer
9:00 am Ice Breaker Activity: Campers teach mini activities
Description: Campers can volunteer to lead an activity
Materials: Materials we have in the room already
Alternative: If no one wants to share an activity: What items did you bring with you? (Discussion)
9:15 am Activity: Upcycled DIY speaker experiment
Description: We will work together to make a basic speaker out of used materials and talk about how a speaker works.
We will also talk about the resources used in electronics and some of the limitations there are.
Materials: Used electrical wire, used magnets, battery (low voltage), old speaker (to compare), scrap paper, aux cable,
(optional: amplifier, alligator clips)
9:45 am Activity: Egg Carton and plastic bottle projects
Description: Student will create flowers, animals, or costume noses out of egg cartons. They also have the option to make
flowers out of plastic bottles. They can apply what they learned earlier and add a circuit to add a light or to make
something move.
Materials: Egg Cartons, plastic bottles, repurposed yarn, paint, pens, wire, wire cutters, small pliers, pipe cleaners, tape,
white glue, stapler, hole punchers, hot glue station, materials from jars, circuitry materials
10:15am BREAK
10:30 am Activity: 3D Collage
Description: Campers will create a 3-dimensional representation of themselves or things that are important to them
using different repurposed materials. They can choose to do something other than a self-portrait but should work in
3 dimensions. If campers brought in anything from home, this would be a good project to incorporate it.
Use all the techniques we have learned so far (paper techniques, cardboard burning, circuitry...)
Materials: Various repurposed materials (such as items from the materials bin, but additional items as well, anything
we can find), old toys (we have multiple bins), wire, hot glue station, magazines, snack wrappers (e.g. chip bags, candy
wrappers, caprisun), scissors, small pliers, wire cutters, chicken wire, cardboard (both as possible base for collage and
to use in collage), circuitry materials, woodburning station
