Week 5: Engineering for Your Environment
                                                July 23 to July 27
                                            Instructor: Erin Salter

Humans have settled in almost every environment on our planet, building and innovating to meet wildly different challenges. In this week campers will explore what it means to engineer solutions to these challenges. How does a building that is safe during an earthquake different from a home that floats wherever the ocean currents take it? How would you harness the power of the wind or save every drop of water in the desert? A variety of activities will encourage students to consider their environment and its features.

Monday (July 23)
9:00am          Intro
9:30am          Activity/Lesson:  What does engineering for you environment mean?
~ Talk about different environmental challenges
10:15am                  BREAK
10:30am        Activity/Lesson:  Design and craft a rover for an alien planet.
Rovers will be made with a pull-back toy car type design so they will move when wound up

~ Build a water filter system using simple materials like sand and pebbles.
~ What materials/setup allow for the cleanest water?
~ What setup loses the least water?
~ How well are different water contaminants (dirt, oil, etc) cleaned out by the filters?
10:15am                    BREAK
10:30am          Activity/Lesson: Build an evaporation-resistant water reservoir. We will leave these outside in the sun all week.
